What other customers ask

Taking out insurance

Which bikes can I insure? Can I also insure my e-bike?
Bikes and e-bikes (electric bikes or pedal-assisted electric motorcycles up to a max. speed of 45 km/h) that are less than six years old can be insured.

How much does the bike insurance cost?
The premium depends on the chosen sum insured and the chosen coverage (with or without on-site breakdown assistance):

Insured sum 2’000 4’000 8’000 12’000
Annual premium 79 99 149 199

Breakdown service on-site (optional) CHF 15

Can Zurich send me an offer?
No. You can calculate the premium with a few clicks directly online, which is why we do not make individual offers. The insurance can then be taken out directly online.

I don't have a credit card, can I pay the insurance on invoice?
No. The bike insurance is a purely online insurance product and as such can only be paid for by credit card – it's all very convenient and uncomplicated.

Isn't my bike or e-bike already insured under my household contents insurance?
Bikes and pedal-assisted e-bikes capable of speeds of up to 25 km/h are covered under the household contents insurance, but the coverage and sums insured included often do not provide sufficient protection. Bikes are usually lost or stolen outside the house and the household contents insurance only pays if the "simple theft outside the home" supplement is included. However, this is often only the case up to a sum insured of CHF 2,000. Besides, damage due to an accident or a fall is often not covered or limited to a sum insured under the sports equipment or accidental damage to contents insurance. A supplementary bike insurance is therefore worthwhile, especially in the case of expensive bikes or e-bikes. Pedal-assisted e-bikes capable of speeds of up to 45 km/h are only insured under the household contents insurance with the supplementary cover "Motorcycle and electric motorcycles". These fast e-bikes can also be insured under the bike insurance.

Who and what is insured?

I have a rental bike; can I insure it?
No, only the owner of the bike and anyone the owner authorizes to use the bike are insured. Only private individuals or companies with a residence or domicile in Switzerland can be insured.

Which events are insured?

  • Theft and robbery
  • Damage or destruction resulting from an accident or fall
  • Breakdown (assumption of additional transport costs up to CHF 500)
  • Optional add-on: 24-hour on-site breakdown assistance

Which insurance pays in the event of a bicycle accident?
If you have caused an accident while out cycling, your personal liability insurance will usually pay for damage to people and other people's property. Taking out personal liability insurance is not mandatory, but of course highly recommended especially as a cyclist. This insurance does not pay for damage to your own bike or any injuries you sustain. The bike insurance is worthwhile for damage to your bike or e-bike. In the event of health consequences, you are protected by your accident insurance.

What is not insured?

Important uninsured events are the following. For a complete list of uninsured events and exclusions, please refer to the General Conditions of Insurance. The following are not insured, among others:

  • Breakdowns due to dead batteries
  • Willful damage by third parties
  • Any form of racing
  • Cycling sports such as track racing, cycle ball, artistic cycling, BMX, slopestyle, dirt jumping and similar activities
  • Training rides as a professional athlete

Where is the insurance valid?

I often use my bike outside of Switzerland, am I still insured?
Yes, as long as you are traveling in Europe (exception: active breakdown assistance, see below). Relevant here is whether or not the location geographically belongs to Europe. The active breakdown assistance is valid in Switzerland and the Principality of Liechtenstein.

Term, renewal, cancellation

How long will the contract be valid after I sign?
The bike insurance protects you for one year from the beginning of the coverage. Rather than renewing automatically, we will send you an email one month before expiry that allows you to renew seamlessly – you decide each year whether you want to renew your insurance. This is also the case if you received the bike insurance from your bike dealer for one year free of charge with your bike purchase.

How do I extend my contract?
One month before the insurance expires, you will receive an email that allows you to extend the insurance coverage.

How can I cancel the insurance?
It is not necessary to cancel, as the insurance expires automatically after one year. One month before expiry, we will send you an email that allows you to seamlessly renew your insurance cover. If you do not want to do this, you can simply ignore the message.

Change of bike

I sold my bike and bought a new one. Can I insure the new bike under the existing policy?
In principle, yes. You just need to inform us of the change so that we can record the new bike in the policy instead of the sold one. However, if you wish to have a different sum insured for the new bike, you will have to take out a new policy; we will then cancel the previous policy on the date of sale and refund the premium proportionately.
The easiest thing to do is to send us an email at and let us know about the bike change. Alternatively, you can also contact us at 0800 80 80 80.

How much will I receive in the event of a loss?

In the event of partial damage (damage as a result of accident/fall), we will cover the repair costs up to the amount of the replacement price at the time of the loss event. Damaged carbon frames are repaired where possible.

In the event of a total loss (destruction as a result of accident/fall and theft/robbery) we will cover up to 100 percent of the current replacement price for a new equivalent bike, depending on the age of the bike. The specific compensation depending on the age of the bike is listed under Article 6.5 of the General Conditions of Insurance.

In the event of a breakdown, we will cover additional transport costs of up to CHF 500. If you have taken out the additional "Breakdown Service" option, we will provide 24-hour on-site breakdown assistance.
