What is mindfulness?
Mindfulness means consciously perceiving the present moment – without immediately judging it. Instead of constantly switching between the past and the future in your mind, focus your attention on what is happening right now: on your thoughts, feelings, body or surroundings.
The term originally comes from Buddhist meditation. In recent decades, however, mindfulness has been the subject of intensive scientific research and has been integrated into various stress management programs.
In everyday life, mindfulness means above all:
- consciously perceiving what is happening
- pausing instead of reacting automatically
- staying focused on a task
- being kind and patient with yourself
This attitude can help us to recognize challenges more clearly and act more consciously, especially in the work environment.
Why mindfulness is becoming increasingly important at work
The world of work is changing rapidly: Digital communication, a high volume of information and complex tasks pose challenges for many people. At the same time, stress levels and mental exhaustion are increasing in many professions.
Mindfulness can help us to cope better with these demands. Those who work mindfully are aware of their own thoughts, feelings and physical signals earlier. This makes it easier to react consciously instead of acting automatically under pressure.
At the same time, mindfulness strengthens important social skills. Those who are mindful are better able to respond to their own needs and the needs of others. This promotes empathy and emotional intelligence – key skills for respectful teamwork.
For employees, mindfulness can:
- reduce stress
- improve concentration
- promote emotional stability
- strengthen personal resilience
- promote empathy and emotional intelligence in dealing with others
Companies also benefit:
- Teams communicate more clearly and respectfully.
- Conflicts are recognized more quickly and resolved more constructively.
- Employees remain more motivated and healthier.
- Collaboration and productivity improve.
A mindful corporate culture therefore supports both the health of employees and the long-term success of a company.
Mindfulness in everyday working life: Six simple exercises
Mindfulness can also be integrated into a busy working day. Even brief moments of conscious attention can help to clear the mind and gain new energy.
1. Short pause for breath when changing tasks
Before you start a new task, pause for a moment.
- Straighten up – standing or sitting
- Take three deep breaths
- Consciously start with the next task
This short break helps you to refocus.
2. Consciously experience your lunch break
3. Give meetings your full attention
Multitasking during meetings is widespread – at the same time, this reduces the quality of collaboration.
These tips can help:
- Put away your smartphone.
- Do not answer emails during the meeting.
- Use a clear agenda.
This promotes concentration and efficiency.
4. Short offline moments in everyday life
Even short breaks can help to reduce stress.
Examples:
- Stand up briefly and walk a few steps
- Consciously look out of the window
- Take a few calming breaths
Just two minutes can help you think more clearly again.
5. The mindfulness check
Stop for a moment several times a day and ask yourself:
- How does my body feel right now?
- Am I sitting comfortably?
- What is my most important task for the next moment?
This self-reflection brings your attention back to the moment.
6. The 10-minute breathing exercise
A simple exercise for more calm and focus:
- Sit down comfortably with both feet on the floor.
- Back upright but relaxed.
- Close your eyes or lower your gaze.
- Breathe in slowly through your nose (count to 4).
- Breathe out calmly through your mouth (count to 6).
Focus your attention on your breathing. If thoughts arise, notice them and gently return to your breathing.
This exercise can be done in the morning, during your lunch break or after work.

Among other things, this involves strengthening employees' individual resources and collaboration in teams – particularly in dealing with stress, change and challenging work situations.
Our experts support companies in developing a healthy and sustainable work culture with workshops, training and advice.
Mindfulness starts with small moments
Mindfulness is not a complicated concept. Rather, it is about consciously pausing again and again in everyday life and paying attention to the present moment.
Even small changes – a short breathing exercise, a conscious break or mindful interaction within the team – can make a big difference. They promote concentration, boost satisfaction and support a healthy working culture.
