Every day, we use passwords to authenticate our identity - for example, with banks, online shops, or employers. Complexity and length are characteristic of secure passwords. But who can remember dozens of highly complex passwords?
Password protection
You can either manually define secure passwords or generate and manage them using a password manager. The benefits of a password manager are clear: passwords are ready in seconds, stored uniquely and encrypted on your device.
What makes a password secure?
- Length: Secure passwords should be at least 12 characters long.
- Complexity: A mix of letters, numbers, and special characters instead of easily guessable names or birth dates.
- Single-use: Each user account should have its own password. Never use the same password for multiple purposes.
Secure passwords are essential to protect against data misuse. A password manager can be helpful given the multitude of passwords needed.
Password Manager
The Zurich Cyber Security app offers, among other things, a password manager. This simplifies and secures your digital life by creating secure, unique passwords for each account, reducing the risk of hacking. Additionally, the password manager stores your passwords so you don't have to remember them, making your online accounts safer.
Use two-factor authentication.
With two-factor authentication, the user must identify themselves with two factors, which increases security when logging into user accounts. A password alone is no longer sufficient. Typically, authentication is done with a password and an additional factor, such as a code that the system sends via SMS to the registered smartphone after the correct password is entered.
