Buy and sell online

Buying and selling online is practical, saves time and offers a huge selection. Sadly, there are also scammers on the Internet. If you follow a few simple rules, you can protect yourself well. The most important tips and how Zurich can support you in the event of a loss can be found here.

Benefits: How to benefit from online buying/selling

Whether it's new headphones, a second-hand bike or a vacation home for next summer – the choice is huge on the Internet. Private individuals benefit from low prices, convenient delivery and the ability to manage almost everything from home. And if you want to sell something yourself, you can reach potential buyers all over the country.

Risks of buying and selling online: What you need to know

Unfortunately, criminals are also taking advantage of the opportunities offered by online commerce. They lure you in with "too good to be true" offers, pretend to be real stores or falsify reviews. One wrong click – and money or data is lost.

Providers such as Ricardo point out current phishing attempts on their website. For example, it warns users about fake text messages that they receive as soon as they have sold something. Allegedly, a certain link must be used in order to receive the payment. Access data for payment cards, Twint or bank accounts is to be entered via the link as confirmation. Information that reputable providers would never ask for.

Typical scams and how to recognize them

  • Unknown webshop: A "top deal" for electronics offers a 60% discount. You can't find a complete imprint, and payment is only possible by prepayment. Look out, this could be a fake product.
  • Classifieds sale: The buyer offers more than the asking price and sends a "proof of payment". No money has been received in the account. This was a bogus purchase.
  • Fake delivery service: The interested party is unable to collect the goods, suggests a "partner delivery service", and asks for your credit card details via a link. Stay on the official platform to prevent phishing.
  • Phishing via QR code: After a successful advertisement, a QR code is sent by SMS to receive the payment. Do not enter any data and report the incident (e.g. to the National Cyber Security Centre)
  • Misuse of data: You use the same password for different platforms. This makes it easier for hackers to access your data. Your account is being misused for false advertisements. Use unique and strong passwords and, where possible, two-factor authentication to better protect yourself.

Good to know: With Cyber – Prevention from Zurich, you are informed about the latest fraud scams and can keep track of them.

Fake stores and dropshipping – what's the difference?

  • Fake stores: The aim is fraud. Goods ordered and paid for are never delivered. The imprint is missing or falsified, and the prices are usually conspicuously low. Quality seals and ratings are often manipulated.
  • Dropshipping stores: The goods are delivered, but often come from abroad. Quality and customer service are often poor, and returns and guarantees are difficult to handle.

Warning signals: Be aware of the following

You should be skeptical about these types of offers:

  • too good to be true: Unusually low price, "get one now", alleged "firecracker offers"
  • too urgent: Time pressure, "today only", "pay now"
  • too unknown: Foreign accounts, unusual collection/payment methods, switch from purchase portal to WhatsApp/SMS, different account holder.
  • too confidential: Request for passport copy, e‑banking/credit card/TWINT data for "payment processing".
  • too lavish: Overpayment, coverage of high fees

Checklist for your secure online purchase or sale

  1. Do I know the provider?
  2. Is there a complete imprint and customer service?
  3. Are the prices conspicuously low?
  4. Can I pay securely? E.g. on account, cash on collection, or via established services such as PayPal, Google Pay or Apple Pay
  5. Are there reviews on independent portals (e.g. Trustpilot)? Read several reviews and watch out for extremely positive/negative reviews – especially from new accounts with no previous activity.

When in doubt: It is better to choose a different store or look for warnings on trustworthy comparison sites such as Trustpilot or the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC).

Practical tips for more security when shopping online

  • Protection against phishing and malware: Look for https encryption in the browser line (lock symbol). If this is missing, data could be intercepted.
Tip: The Zurich Cyber Security App warns you of suspicious websites and links. Also keep devices and browsers up to date to close security gaps. Automatic updates are recommended. And use antivirus and anti-malware programs that detect suspicious websites and files.
  • Check imprint and identity: Reputable stores provide contact details and commercial register numbers.
  • Compare ratings: Not only on the store page, but also on independent platforms.
  • Use secure payment methods: Use well-known payment service providers such as PayPal, a credit card with 3D-Secure or an escrow service. These offer buyer protection and reduce the risk of payment fraud. Avoid direct transfers to unknown accounts or payments via cryptocurrencies, as these are difficult to trace.
  • Password hygiene: Use a separate, strong password for each store and activate two-factor authentication for logging in whenever possible. A password manager can generate and manage secure passwords for you. With Cyber – Prevention, Zurich offers a password manager and other important protection functions combined in one app.
  • Pay attention to the small print: Check the return and warranty conditions in advance.
  • Communication in the store: Do not share sensitive data by email, text message or WhatsApp, stay in the official channel.

What should I do if I have become a victim of online fraud?

If you have provided access data or other private data, try to remain calm. It is important to take the right steps now:

  • Block bank account: The most important thing is that you inform your bank immediately to limit the damage and have the affected accounts blocked immediately.
  • Change passwords: Change all passwords of affected accounts. Choose secure combinations of letters, numbers and special characters that you have not used or are not currently using for any other account.
  • Inform the platform: Also report the incident to the platform provider concerned. This allows them to take measures and warn other platform users.
  • Press charges: File a complaint with the police.
