What distinguishes the best employers – and why is Zurich one of them?

We all spend a large part of our lives at work – so it should not only bring in money, but also provide joy and meaningfulness. Employers have a major influence on this. But what distinguishes the best employers? There are some similarities that can be observed time and again:

Strong corporate culture

This is probably the most important criterion: The best employers create an appreciative, open and supportive working environment. This means that there is a positive atmosphere with strong teamwork. Employees look forward to meeting their colleagues. They trust each other and can talk transparently about what is on their minds.

Our culture at Zurich Switzerland

At Zurich Switzerland, we are convinced that our unique culture makes us happier, stronger and more successful. We call this strong feeling of togetherness our "blue blood" in honor of the brand color. It includes a respectful working environment with flat hierarchies in which employees are encouraged to contribute ideas and take responsibility. We are very pleased that 94 percent of employees recommend Zurich as an employer.

Diverse development opportunities

The best employers want to grow with their employees. They offer them opportunities and prospects – from career entry to management positions. Careers do not always have to take a hierarchical course; employees can also deliberately position themselves as valued specialists.

Development at Zurich Switzerland

At Zurich Switzerland, we offer a wide range of opportunities for further development, be it through an exciting project, cross-divisional collaboration, part-time studies or our comprehensive internal training program.

We have three dedicated talent programs, including one for women with an interest in management responsibility. But in principle, we regard all employees as talents. As the "CEO of my career," all employees can and should drive their own development, supported by their line manager and HR. Many long-standing employees have already worked in very different departments and have thus built up a broad knowledge base. We aim to fill 30% of vacancies internally, so that there are always career and development opportunities.

We create more than 50 new apprenticeships every year and offer a wide range of entry opportunities for young professionals, for example with two different offers for high school graduates. We are proud of our pioneering trainee program. Of course, we regularly have interesting job offers for experienced specialists. Career changers are also very welcome and can give their career a new direction with us.

Generous benefits

In addition to the actual salary, benefits also play a role when deciding on a new employer. For example, there are enormous differences in occupational retirement provision via the pension fund. Well-being and health offers, as well as attractive working models, are also part of the benefits area.

Benefits at Zurich Switzerland

Zurich ensures market-driven and gender-neutral remuneration. Employees benefit from a generous pension fund solution with above-average benefits for part-time employees and a choice of how much money to save. There are also various additional benefits such as generous parental leave for both parents, the promotion of sustainable mobility, a substantial life insurance allowance and discounts on other insurance policies. There are inspiring and modern workplaces at all locations in Switzerland. A comprehensive well-being offer for physical, mental, social and financial well-being rounds off the benefits package.

A good work-life balance

A good balance between work and private life is important for long-term satisfaction and health – this has been confirmed by numerous studies. Employees with children or relatives in need of care are happy if their employer offers fair contractual conditions, as well as a certain amount of flexibility for unforeseen situations.

Zurich enables flexible working models: All positions are also advertised on a part-time basis (80%) in principle. Depending on the role, hybrid working is possible, as well as top sharing and job sharing. Equally important is a culture of trust and flexibility, so that employees can count on the support of the team in challenging life situations.

Diversity & inclusion

Many people want to be able to contribute their full personality regardless of their gender, identity, origin or stage of life.

At Zurich Switzerland, we actively promote equal opportunities and diversity and have already received several awards for this. We are convinced that a range of individual backgrounds, personalities, skills and perspectives enriches us and makes us better. This also reflects the diverse realities of our customers' lives.

Sustainability & social responsibility

Many people feel the need to work for a company that is committed to the climate, environment and society and makes a positive contribution. They want to do something meaningful with their work and be employed by a company they believe in.

Ecological and social sustainability at Zurich Switzerland

Zurich Switzerland's sustainability agenda is based on a holistic approach and achieves an impact across three strategic priorities: customers, the environment and society.

In the customer area, for example, we are committed to sustainable claims management (repairing instead of replacing) and to strengthening climate resilience with Zurich Resilience Solutions. We also support our corporate customers in their transformation to net zero, for example with the "CEO4Climate" initiative.

In the area of the environment, the focus is on sustainable investments, sustainable operations (e.g. in building management) and sustainable procurement.

In the area of society, for example, we work with FRAGILE Suisse, the patient organization for people with a brain injury. We are also committed to the ombudsman's office for children's rights. On their self-chosen Community Day, all employees can do a day of charitable work during working hours.

We help people who have been unable to work for a long time due to illness or accident to return to work. We also create new prospects for refugees in collaboration with the "Powercoders" program. In addition, we work with the Athletes Network and support former elite athletes with building a second career.
