When the unforeseen thwarts your travel plans
Booking a trip is associated with anticipation – but also with uncertainty. What if something comes up shortly before departure? Illness, an accident in the family or an unforeseeable event at home – there are various reasons why a trip may have to be canceled at short notice. If you book a trip, you don't want to be stuck with the cancellation costs in an emergency.
This is where travel cancellation insurance comes in – also known as cancellation cost insurance: It covers the costs if you have to cancel your trip for an insured reason.

When the insurance takes effect
Cancellation insurance protects you if you are unable to travel for an insured, unforeseeable reason. Such reasons include:
- A sudden, serious illness or accident
- The death of a close relative
- A serious, unexpected illness of a close relative (e.g. grandparents), even if they are not traveling with you
- Complications during pregnancy
- A break-in, water damage or fire at home
- Natural disasters or strikes that make your trip impossible
- Stolen travel documents
- Unexpected medical emergencies involving dogs or cats when accommodation at an animal boarding center is not possible
Other important reasons are also covered. Please refer to the insurance conditions for the exact scope of cover. Certain other cancellation types are not covered, for example because you simply no longer wish to travel or you have fallen out with a fellow traveler.
For whom is travel cancellation insurance worthwhile?
Cancellation insurance is worthwhile for anyone who wants to book their trip with peace of mind – even if not everything can be planned. It provides security when planning a trip, where anticipation and uncertainty are closely intertwined.
It is particularly sensible if
- several coinsured persons are traveling with you, which may result in higher cancellation costs
- the trip is booked early – for example for popular travel destinations, vacation apartments or language courses
- the bookings are expensive or cannot be canceled
- you travel several times a year or like to plan spontaneously
After all, if something comes up, it's reassuring not to have to worry about the financial consequences.

What does travel cancellation insurance or cancellation insurance cost?

Single-trip insurance or annual insurance – which is better for me?
With Zurich, you benefit from annual insurance: You are insured throughout the year for all your trips. This is particularly practical for frequent travelers and saves time and effort compared to one-off insurance policies. As a rule, an annual policy is priced more favorably than if you were to take out insurance for each trip individually.
Who is insured?
Depending on your family situation, travel cancellation insurance can be arranged so that not only you, but also your partner, children and other people living in the same household are automatically insured.
- Variant for a single person:
The policyholder is insured. In the event of marriage, registered partnership or cohabitation, all persons living in the same household are also automatically insured for one year (contingency cover, the limits for the individual apply). - Variant for all persons living in the same household:
The insurance covers the insured person and all persons who live permanently with them in the same household or return regularly as weekly/weekend residents.
Minor children of the insured persons are also covered by the insurance for trips taken together, even if they do not live in the same household.
Can I take out insurance immediately at the time of booking?
Yes – you can take out cancellation insurance directly when or shortly after booking your trip. The cover is valid from the selected contract start date, i.e. usually immediately. The only important thing is that no insured reason for cancellation has occurred or is foreseeable at the time the insurance is taken out.
What should I do in the event of cancellation?
If you have to cancel a trip, it is important to act quickly. Inform your tour operator and contact us as soon as possible:
- Submit the claim around the clock directly via our online form together with the necessary documents (e.g. booking documents, confirmation of cancellation, medical certificate).
We will check your claim and take care of cost reimbursement.
