Frequently asked questions about bicycle insurance

Isn't my bicycle or e-bike already insured under my household contents insurance?

Bicycles and e-bikes with pedal assistance up to 25 km/hour are covered under the household contents insurance, but the coverage and sums insured included often do not provide sufficient protection. Bicycles are usually stolen outside the house and the household contents insurance only pays if the "Simple theft outside the home" supplement is included, which is often the case with a sum insured of CHF 2,000. However, this is not enough for more expensive bicycles. Accidental damage is usually not covered or then covered by the additional cover "Accidential damage to sports equipment" or "Accidential damage to contents" with a limited sum insured of, for example, CHF 2,000. Thus, an additional bicycle insurance is therefore worthwhile, especially for expensive bicycles or e-bikes. E-bikes with pedal assistance up to 45 km/hour are only insured under the household contents insurance with the supplementary cover "Motorcycles and electric motorcycles". These fast e-bikes can also be insured under the Zurich Bicycle insurance.

Can I also insure my e-bike?

Yes, both slow e-bikes with pedal assistance up to 25 km/hour and fast e-bikes with pedal assistance up to 45 km/hour can be insured under the Zurich Bicycle insurance.

How much money will I receive in the event of a claim?

  • In the event of theft or total loss, you will receive - depending on the age of the bicylce (see GCI Art. 12.3.1) - up to 100% of the current new price, less the deductible stated in the policy.
  • In the event of a partial loss due to damage, e.g. as a result of a fall, we will pay the repair costs, less the deductible stated in the policy. Carbon fiber frames will be repaired wherever possible.

Which insurance pays in the event of a bicycle accident?

If you have caused an accident while out cycling, your personal liability insurance will usually pay for damage to people and other people's property. Taking out personal liability insurance is not mandatory, but of course highly recommended especially for cyclists. For fast e-bikes, liability insurance with a vignette is compulsory, which you can usually obtain from the road traffic office in your canton. However, this insurance does not pay for damage to your own bicycle or any injuries you sustain. Bicycle insurance is therefore worthwhile for damage to your bicycle or e-bike. In the event of health consequences, you are protected by your accident insurance.

How much is the insurance premium?

The insurance premium depends on the value of the bike or e-bike, the amount of the deductible and additional insurances such as earthquake or roadside assistance. Calculate your individual premium in the premium calculator on our website.

What will I receive from Zurich Insurance if my bike is stolen?

With bicycle insurance from Zurich Insurance, you will be reimbursed for the replacement value of your bicycle or e-bike. For bicycles or e-bikes stolen within the first two years from new purchase, this is the amount you would pay today for the same model or a successor model. For older bicycles or e-bikes, compensation is graduated according to age.

In which cases is bicycle insurance worthwhile?

Special bicycle insurance is worthwhile in the following cases:

  • You own an expensive bike with a value over CHF 2,000.
  • You own a fast e-bike with pedal assistance up to 45 km/h.
  • You are often on the road with your bike.
  • You want additional protection for damage and destruction.
  • You would like 24h roadside assistance (additional module "Provisional insurance and costs").
